Consumer Reports Recommended. The Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. Practically every product or service is eligible for some kind of designation that indicates quality and trustworthiness. Universities are no exception, and The University of Texas Permian Basin has been honored with many such acknowledgements, many in the form of accreditations.

Have you ever wondered what accreditation is all about, who does the accrediting, and what criteria they use? Let’s examine all of these now.

Why Choose an Accredited University?

Accreditation indicates that an institution has been independently verified as meeting the highest educational standards and is being reevaluated on an ongoing basis. It’s a key consideration when choosing any institution of higher learning because it:

  • Indicates a high-quality education.
  • Is widely recognized and well regarded.
  • Is a must if you wish to pursue ongoing studies at most universities.

By choosing an accredited university, you can feel confident that you’ll get a superb education and earn a credential that employers and/or licensing boards recognize and respect. If you choose a non-accredited university, however, you’ll face some limitations:

  • To qualify for federal financial aid, you must attend or plan to attend an accredited institution.
  • An accredited college or university will only accept transfer credits from another accredited institution. If you begin a program at a non-accredited school and then wish to transfer to an accredited school, you will have wasted time and money on the credits you already earned.
  • Many employers will only offer tuition reimbursement benefits for accredited schools.

Regionally accredited universities such as UT Permian Basin are generally considered the top choice in terms of financial aid availability, transferrable credits, and overall recognition by the academic and professional communities.

Accreditation by University and College

UT Permian Basin holds regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). SACSCOC is one of six regional accrediting bodies that operate within the United States. The others include:

  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)

In addition to regional accreditation, individual colleges within a university can also receive accreditation. UT Permian Basin’s colleges have numerous such accreditations:

  • Our College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)—a distinction shared by just 5% of business programs worldwide.
  • Our College of Arts and Sciences has accreditations in areas including athletic training (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education), music (National Association of Schools of Music), social work (Council on Social Work Education), and visual arts (National Association of Schools of Art and Design).
  • Our College of Education programs have been accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and verified by the Accountability System for Educator Preparation (ASEP).
  • Our School of Nursing is accredited by the prestigious Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Our College of Engineering has multiple accreditations from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Who Are the Accreditors?

Accrediting organizations are generally made up of accomplished academicians who are qualified to synthesize and assess a broad range of information about a given educational institution. They verify a variety of criteria, including whether:

  • The institution has a stated mission and adheres to said mission.
  • The institution operates in an ethical, inclusive, and transparent manner.
  • The institution has the physical, technological, financial, and other resources to fulfill its mission.
  • The institution’s programs are effective at achieving their stated educational goals.
  • The institution’s student body meets acceptable graduation, employment, licensure acquisition, loan repayment, retention, and transfer rates.

Teams of representatives from accrediting bodies will visit the campuses of institutions requesting accreditation to review documentation and interview deans, provosts, program administrators, faculty, and students. Most universities undergo this process every 5 to 10 years to maintain their accreditation. In addition, a university must be reassessed anytime it adds a new program, opens a new campus, or makes any other “substantive change” to ensure its adherence to its high standards. Institutions that fail to meet required standards can be denied accreditation, or, if previously accredited, lose their accreditation.

Graduate school is often the end of a journey for students eager to start their careers. For experienced professionals, it offers the chance to move up the corporate ladder or pivot into a new direction. Yet no matter how necessary a graduate education may be for improving a person’s career prospects or satisfaction, it doesn’t come cheap. On average, a master’s degree costs $66,340. There is, however, a more flexible alternative for students interested in enrolling in the same courses as master’s degree students without the financial burden.

What Is a Graduate Certificate?

A graduate certificate is a specialized credential that provides students with foundational or supplemental knowledge in a particular area. For instance, students at The University of Texas Permian Basin can earn graduate certificates in GIS and Geospatial, Spanish, or Energy Business.

There’s very little that separates a graduate certificate program from a master’s degree program, at least at first glance. Graduate certificate students can enroll in many of the same courses as master’s degree students, and if they’re enrolled in one of UT Permian Basin’s online programs, they’ll be able to view lectures, complete assignments, and engage in online discussions with other students in their cohort. They’ll also benefit from the many online resources we offer, including online academic advising and academic support. However, there are some qualities unique to graduate certificate programs that make them the preferred option for many of our students.

An Accelerated Graduate Program

A master’s degree can be earned in as little as two years, assuming students are enrolled full time. Unfortunately, not every student can commit to a two-year degree program. A graduate certificate program can usually be completed in as little as one year, sometimes even faster. This is because graduate certificate students take on far fewer credit hours than their peers in master’s degree programs.

For example, our Graduate Certificate in Energy Business is a 12-credit program that provides industry-relevant knowledge unique to the energy field in less than one year. Students can earn a career-enhancing credential in a fraction of the time it would take to earn a master’s degree. Many of our online students have responsibilities outside of their studies, including caring for loved ones and maintaining their careers. UT Permian Basin’s online graduate certificate programs allow students to earn a graduate credential on their terms without unduly impacting their personal or professional lives.

A Cost-Effective Investment

The cost of pursuing a master’s degree is always top of mind for students. As mentioned, a graduate degree can set students back well over $50,000—and that’s before taking into account additional expenses, such as books, supplies, and fees. Here at UT Permian Basin, we strive to keep our graduate programs as accessible and affordable as possible. Tuition for most our master’s degree programs is less than $15,000, but we understand that that cost may still pose a challenge for some students.

Tuition for a graduate certificate program, by comparison, is more affordable because students are taking fewer credit hours. The estimated cost of tuition for UT Permian Basin graduate students is $355.99 per credit hour, so the total cost of tuition for our 12-credit-hour GIS and Geospatial Graduate Certificate is $4,271: a fraction of the cost of a traditional master’s degree program. Either credential can help students open doors to new, rewarding opportunities, but a graduate certificate is a smaller commitment that can result in advancement far exceeding students’ expectations.

A Concentrated Course of Study

A master’s degree—and the time, dedication, and effort spent earning one—is generally more respected by employers than a graduate certificate. Master’s degree programs also tend to provide a broad course of study to help ensure that students are prepared for any number of situations they may encounter in their career field. Still, as impressive as a master’s degree is on paper, it may be overkill when it comes to securing a more rewarding career.

A graduate certificate is no replacement for a master’s degree. Rather, it’s designed to provide students with a particular skill set that can help advance or kick-start their careers. Due to their accelerated time to completion, graduate certificates provide a highly concentrated course of study that allows students to focus on topics that align with their interests and goals. Professionals in pursuit of a raise or promotion will find this option especially appealing. A graduate certificate can provide the edge a candidate needs to rise above the competition and impress their employer, minus the need to devote time and money to subjects that may not pertain directly to their career.

1. Claim Your FalconID

To claim your FalconID, visit this page and have your 10-digit student ID number on hand. This will be your username for logging into electronic resources at UT Permian Basin, so be sure to commit it to memory or write it down somewhere secure. Be sure to use the same information you provided to ApplyTexas when claiming your FalconID. If you are unable to claim your FalconID after inputting your student ID, birthdate, and phone number correctly, contact the Registrar’s Office for assistance.

2. Know Your Texas Success Initiative Status

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) assessment is designed to help determine if incoming students are ready for college-level work in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Prior to registering, freshman students are required to take the TSI test or transfer credit for a math, reading, and/or writing class. Depending on their standardized test scores, prior educational history, and military service, some students may be exempt from TSI requirements.

To find out if you are exempt from or have met TSI requirements, you can contact an advisor or counselor or contact the Registrar’s Office.

The agreement takes only a few minutes to read and sign. If you’re looking for a degree program that can be completed at your preferred pace, you’ll want to look online.

The University of Texas Permian Basin offers numerous accelerated degree programs that can be completed quickly and efficiently — some in as little as eight months. This is due in part to their online format and asynchronous elements. Join us as we discuss what our accelerated online programs are like for graduate and undergraduate students.

How Long Does an Accelerated Bachelor’s Degree Take?

The average college semester is about 15 weeks long. No wonder bachelor’s degrees are earned in four years and graduate degrees in two, on average. While whole sessions at UT Permian Basin will run for 14 to 16 weeks, the A and B sessions of our summer, fall, and spring semesters are generally just eight weeks long (seven for summer). These compressed sessions allow students to graduate in a fraction of the time it would take to complete a traditional degree program.

So, how quickly can you earn your degree? You can don your graduation cap in as little as eight months.

At UT Permian Basin, you decide how quickly you progress through a program. Power through course content or replay a video lecture to ensure you absorb the material. Log on from anywhere, at any time. By working at your own pace, you’re not only earning a degree at an accelerated rate but also tailoring your education to your preferred learning style. Graduate with a degree and an entirely new set of skills that are sure to make employers and admission committees take note.

What Is an Online Accelerated Degree Program Like?

What is an accelerated degree program like? Not much different from what can be found on campus, aside from an efficient online format. The same experienced, dedicated faculty members who teach online also lead our on-campus programs. Their doors — actual and virtual — are always open, and the similarities don’t stop there.

Online Student Resources

Online students have access to many of the same resources offered on campus. Advisors are available for office visits or by email or phone to help students make informed academic decisions. UT Permian Basin also provides 24/7 online tutoring through Brainfuse Online Tutoring and writing assistance through the Online Writing Lab. All students are encouraged to take advantage of these online resources.

Supportive Classrooms

Though separated by distance, students still find camaraderie with their fellow Falcons in our accelerated online programs. There are ample opportunities to network and collaborate during discussions, assignments, and group projects. Moreover, 24-hour discussion boards help ensure that support is available day or night, which may not always be the case in a traditional classroom.

Comprehensive Courses

Undergraduate and graduate students join UT Permian Basin in the hopes of receiving a life- and career-altering education and degree. We strive in all of our efforts to live up to their expectations. Although our programs are accelerated, they nonetheless provide students with comprehensive knowledge of their particular field of study.

Course content is updated regularly to align with the demands and trends students will encounter in their careers. Upon completing their accelerated online program, graduates receive the exact same degree as those awarded in our on-campus programs. A diploma bearing The University of Texas Permian Basin’s name is a prestigious award affirming a student’s completion of a course of study and mastery of its content.

Ask yourself: If I can receive the same guidance, education, and degree from an accelerated online program, why would I ever anchor myself to a college campus?

For over 50 years, students have benefited from the affordable tuition, vigorous curriculum, and experienced mentorship offered by The University of Texas Permian Basin. Now, undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to enroll in virtual courses and receive the same exemplary education without ever having to set foot on campus.

UT Permian Basin offers over 30 online programs designed to empower students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen career fields. Our online programs are as praiseworthy as any found on campus, and we’ve taken every measure to ensure that commonplace barriers to education, such as misleading tuition costs or required standardized testing, have been mitigated or removed.

Let’s take a look at five reasons to join one of our West Texas online degree programs and see if we can’t make a Falcon out of you yet.

  1. Undergraduate and graduate programs are online and asynchronous.

We know what you’re looking for: an online program that can accommodate your personal and professional commitments. You’re not alone. Many of our students are working professionals with the goal of maintaining and progressing in their current profession. That’s why the majority of our online programs are entirely online and asynchronous.

In these online and asynchronous programs, coursework can be completed on your own time, at your own pace. You’ll still be able to engage with your instructors and fellow students in 24-hour interactive discussion boards, but now you’ll have the freedom to choose when and where you study. An astronaut on the International Space Station could excel in one of our online programs, assuming they had a Wi-Fi connection.

Our programs that aren’t 100% online still feature online courses, but they require students to engage in a structured learning experience or enroll in practicum or clinical courses. For example, almost all of the programs offered by the College of Education place students in a school setting for a full semester, where they can gain hands-on experience under the watch of their University supervisor. Practicum requirement or not, our online programs are flexible and convenient for all students.

  1. Graduates earn the same degree as their on-campus peers.

A concern many online students share is the quality of their degree. When a graduate of an online program receives their sheepskin, the last thing they want to see is their degree qualified by the word “online.” At UT Permian Basin, graduates receive the exact same degree as those awarded in our on-campus programs.

Earning a degree online is no longer a rarity; in fact, it’s becoming the norm. Rather than commute to class, students are continuing their education from the comfort and safety of their own homes. This shift has resulted in online degrees being widely regarded with the same respect as traditional degrees. UT Permian Basin graduates are awarded a degree that’s not only identical to a traditional degree but also just as credible to employers.

  1. Online students are taught by the same faculty that teach on campus.

One of the greatest benefits of The University of Texas Permian is the fact that our online courses are taught by the same respected faculty who teach on campus. Many of our faculty members have years of experience as professionals and instructors in their respective fields. For example, students in our online Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies program are taught exclusively by faculty who have extensive experience in the criminal justice field. Similarly, our online RN to BSN program is led by experienced educators—registered nurses and doctors of nursing practice—who have firsthand experience with the challenges facing nurses today.

  1. Our admissions process is simple and welcomes all applicants.

In your research, you may have come across certificate or degree programs that require applicants to submit standardized test scores, such as the GRE. These requirements are meant to ensure that applicants are prepared for college-level coursework; however, these requirements can sometimes bar exceptional applicants who would perform far beyond what their test scores might suggest.

At UT Permian Basin, we recognize the value of standardized tests as a piece of the review process, but we want to give as many applicants as possible the chance to change their lives through higher learning. That’s why we try to review applicants on a holistic basis whenever possible.

Applying for admission to many of our online programs requires little more than your transcripts and a completed application. Moreover, many of our programs that do have GRE or GPA requirements have conditional admission requirements that would allow otherwise less qualified applicants to apply. We’ve also temporarily waived entrance exam and official transcript requirements for many of our programs in response to COVID-19. Applying to UT Permian Basin has never been easier.

  1. Our cost-effective tuition rates are some of the best in the country.

UT Permian Basin offers some of the most affordable online programs in the country. You can check out our estimated cost of tuition here. Regardless of location, on-campus and remote students pay the same affordable, competitive tuition rate within a program.

Affordable tuition rates aren’t the only financial benefit available to students in our online degree programs. Grants, scholarships, and financial aid options are available, depending on students’ level and program. We also offer payment plans for students unable to pay their tuition all at once. We strive to ensure that financial costs never get in the way of a student and their academic and career goals.

The cost of online learning will always be top of mind, and understandably so. Not all online programs provide the benefits of UT Permian Basin, but the long-term benefits of earning an online degree or certificate from our University far outweigh the immediate costs. By becoming a UT Permian Basin Falcon, you can earn credentials that can open doors to new opportunities, increase your earning potential, and secure a rewarding career. We think that’s well worth the price of admission, don’t you?
