ACCT3334 Healthcare Management Information Systems

Course Description

A survey of the management information systems used in the healthcare industry and the role of information systems in the efficient operation of healthcare services. The course will also highlight current regulatory and social issues patient information and the use of information technology in healthcare.

The Healthcare Management Information Systems (HMIS) is motivated by a dire need for executives, managers, and professionally trained students who must possess the knowledge and skills that will result in effective planning, design, management, execution, and use of various information systems resources. The HMIS course focuses on training future healthcare leaders, administrators, and managers to go beyond just acquiring the expertise in conceptualizing and defining the precise information they need. In addition, specifically health executives and managers should also be able to plan strategically and build the appropriate healthcare management information technology infrastructure and understand the implementation challenges to transform the way information is used and shared within and outside of their organizations.

  • Describe the fundamentals of healthcare concepts; HMIS Components, Basic Functions, and Cultures. (CLO1)
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of Chief Executive Offices and Chief Information Officers in Healthcare Services organization. Develop a vision, strategy, and execution relevant to senator executives in Healthcare Services organizations. Define a trustworthy Leader, motivator, an effective communicator, while uncovering the roles and responsibilities of the Chief Information Officer. (CLO2)
  • Examine the emotional support and empowerment of healthcare information seekers, their profile, access, and alternative means of accessing health information relevant for today and in the future.(CLO3)
  • Understand the fundamentals of Internet and Associated Technologies for Healthcare Service Organizations; Supply Chain Management (SCM), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). (CLO4)
  • Introduction of building virtual communities and networking healthcare provider organization. Examine community Health Information Networks from CHIN to RHINO, and HL7 Standard Health Exchange relevant to Community Management Systems. Review Mayo Clinic Case Study. (CLO5)
  • Observe Telecommunications and Network Concepts for Healthcare Services Organizations. Define EHR, CPOE, and CDSS collectively with a historical evolution review. Review the methodology of Electronic Healthcare Records, Computerized Physician Order Entry, and Clinical Decision Support Systems, while investigative both the benefits and challenges.(CLO6)
  • Review the ideology associated to achieving Systems Interoperability with Web services capabilities. Develop interoperability solutions, evaluate the background of WSIHIS, and based solutions for interoperability, and the means to perform system assessment on WSIHIS (Web Service- based Healthcare Information Systems) (CLO7)
  • Evaluate the possibilities of information system planning and management. Analyze the PODC model (planning, organizing, directing, and controlling). In addition, we will consider information sources, business systems planning, critical success factors, while reviewing in-depth information to develop a conclusion. (CLO8)
  • Investigate system analysis and the development of methodologies. Examine HMIS (Healthcare Management Information System) analysis and development of associated methodologies to include both SDLC Base (System Development Life Cycle) and Structure Methodologies. In addition, we will review prototyping, contemporary models to consist of computer-assisted software Engineering, Multiview, and open-sources software. (CLO9)
  • Explore data stewardship, system design, implementation, and evaluation of these foundations. Review the change continuums referencing technology, processes, and people. Likewise, data stewardship of quality, management, and security implications, while assessing the available resources, data inventory, and determining the valid values for each attribute. We will focus on the methodology to reviewing processes, personnel responsibilities and post- implementations. (CLO10)
  • Discuss Management information system projects, system Implementation and associated technology services. Evaluate critical success factors for systems implementation collectively with user, system design, and organizational characteristics. Our focus will lead to strategic planning and management issues associated to staffing, project management, reengineering considerations, and end-user involvement. In addition, we will evaluate vendor involvement, pre- implementation preparation, proposal evaluation and selection, and physical implementation and post-implementation upkeep. (CLO11)
  • Take an inside look at system standards and adoptions in healthcare information technologies. Describe the HMIS standards, HIPPA to Spur data standards adoption, and HL7 (Health Level Seven), vocabulary problem, development, and adoption. We will review DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine), the purpose, and adoption of DICOM and Web standards. (CLO12)
  • Evaluate system governance, policy, and international perspectives associated to HMIS globalization through E-Health. Describe tele- health and acknowledge the characteristics E- health and the types of telemedicine. Emphasis are placed on economic perspectives of ICT (Information and communication technology) associated to E- health, production possibility and evaluate the positive externalities. We will analyses influencing factors that are essential to develop theory of innovation, planned behavior, and the environment model. Moreover, the barriers to E- health adoption, stakeholder analysis, and the framework for strategic development, while examining the flow of resources between developed and developing countries.
