CCJS3305 Policing in America

Course Description

A systematic review of the role of law enforcement in contemporary American society. Differing points of view will be critically discussed. The focus of the course will include federal state and local law enforcement.

Students are introduced to the basic concepts of policing including the organization of police departments, the personal side of policing, and police operations in America. Students will learn issues such as police discretion, police use of force, civil liability, police culture, and the impact of the war on terrorism on police operations and practices. Students will assess innovative strategies that address contemporary issues in policing.
