EDBI6326 Methods of Teaching ESL

Course Description

This course provides the foundations for language acquisition and methodology for Second Language Learners, including interpersonal communication skills and academic skills applicable in a school setting. For the Bilingual Education path, select this course or EDBI 6327.

Course Credits: 3

Prerequisites: Admission to UTPB; admission to graduate studies; in addition to the College of Education requirements, students seeking teacher certification in Texas and in bilingual education as a part of the Master of Arts in Education/Bilingual/ESL must apply to the certification program and after completing the program, demonstrate proficiency in Spanish by passing the Texas Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test (BTLPT).

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to identify, develop, and apply the different methodologies and effective strategies to use when working with ESL students in the general education, ESL, or bilingual classroom settings. You will also be able to recognize second language learners’ characteristics/styles and apply effective, appropriate strategies and assessments to promote and facilitate successful learning.
