MA in Mathematics with Pure Mathematics Track Overview
Built on a foundation of principles of algebra, analysis, and other pure mathematics fundamentals, our online Master of Arts in Mathematics with Pure Mathematics track encourages you to round out your knowledge with a selection of science-focused electives. You’ll develop a deep conceptual understanding of graduate-level mathematics and an ability to solve real-world modeling and computational problems, preparing you for future teaching roles and doctoral studies.
We’ve designed this MA in mathematics program for:
- High school educators seeking dual enrollment eligibility.
- Aspiring community college and university adjunct faculty.
- Professionals looking for a pathway to a PhD.
Our online program offers the flexibility to earn a degree around your professional commitments. Study part-time and complete your degree in about three years.
A Flexible, Customizable Experience
Customize your program with thesis and non-thesis options:
- Our thesis option for this track focuses exclusively on mathematics and involves a virtual or in-person presentation.
- Our non-thesis option requires completion of an exam covering core program courses, with the opportunity to retake if needed.
Enjoy further flexibility with live online courses:
- Attend virtual lectures via live streaming video.
- View recorded lecture sessions anytime.
- Attend campus-based lectures, if convenient.

Careers for MA in Mathematics with Pure Mathematics Track Graduates
When you finish your degree, you’ll be equipped to pursue career-advancing certifications and rewarding new roles such as:
Thesis option elective requires additional 12 SCH of MATH graduate courses and 6 SCH of free electives, which may be all MATH or with advisor’s approval may be from other disciplines. Science free electives, particularly computer science (COSC) free electives, are strongly encouraged. Teaching certification requires at least 18 SCH with MATH prefix. Non-thesis option elective requires additional 12 SCH of MATH graduate courses and 12 SCH of free electives, which may be all MATH or with advisor’s approval may be from other disciplines. Science free electives, particularly computer science (COSC) free electives, are strongly encouraged. Teaching certification requires at least 18 SCH with MATH prefix.
Admission Requirements
Regular Admission Status
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 credit hours.
- One of the following:
- Qualifying GRE scores:
- Entrance Scores (ES) = 1600 minimum Entrance Score (ES) = (GPA x 267) + (GRE Quantitative Score x 5.23) (GPA equates to 50% of the decision, GRE Quantitative Reasoning equates to 50% of the decision).
- Qualifying GRE scores:
Or:
-
- Two letters of recommendation from professors who can attest to your mathematical ability and/or ability to succeed in graduate school (at least one must be a STEM professor).
- Letters should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research directly by the reference writer. Applicants must fill out and submit a waiver of right of access form for each letter of recommendation. Applicants can obtain this form by emailing the area coordinator of the graduate mathematics program.
- Two letters of recommendation from professors who can attest to your mathematical ability and/or ability to succeed in graduate school (at least one must be a STEM professor).
- At least one of the following courses or their equivalent with a B or better:
- Math 4315 Algebraic Structures, or
- Math 4360 Intermediate Analysis
A panel appointed by the mathematics department will review letters of recommendation or GRE scores and transcripts and make an admission recommendation.
Conditional Admission Status
Students with a GPA below 3.0 but not lower than 2.75 in the last 60 credit hours may be considered for conditional admission. The admissions committee will review upper-level math courses taken and grades earned in those courses to determine appropriate preparation for success in a graduate math program. Conditionally admitted students may be required to take leveling courses before full admission to the program and must maintain the required GPA to remain a graduate student.
