Course Description

The study of the jazz idiom from its roots in ragtime and blues through swing, bop, cool, fusion, and free styles to current trends in mainstream jazz.

Prerequisites: MUSI 1306 and MUSI 1311 preferred

  • Identify jazz performers and classify them into style genres.
  • Articulate how society and historical events influenced jazz’s development.
  • Investigate a blues or jazz topic beyond lecture and textbook readings and defend an argument.
